Meanwhile, the new Butterfly mode is almost equally mesmerizing - a mode that features butterfly gems that flutter upward and closer to a spider at the top of the screen with each match you make. ![]() But then I played it non-stop for half an hour and realized it was my favorite mode of them all. I admit, I was skeptical of the Poker mode - a mode in which you try to create matches to make the best poker hand you can (match three sets of emeralds, for example, and you've got three-of-a-kind). For example, you'll be asked to make matches that spread gold to each column and row before a clock runs out, or to match equal numbers of blue gems and red gems without letting a scale that keeps tally of each color dip too far to one side. ![]() Quest mode gives players tasks to complete. (You can try it for free or download the full game for $20 here.)ĭiamond Mine mode has you trying to make matches at the bottom of the screen to tunnel downward and unearth gold, artifacts and other rewards. Not only have the graphics and soundtrack in this sequel been given a gorgeous upgrade, "Bejeweled 3" comes with a host of new modes that each put a clever new spin on match-three gameplay. The masters of match-three have delivered a new "Bejeweled" that refreshes and improves upon the genre they popularized. Of course, that means "Bejeweled 3" arrives at a time when match-three games are, well, rather tired. Most of them have been shoddy knock offs, but some of them have been pretty impressive innovations on the idea. Which is to say that, over the years, there have been a whole lot of games that have tried to do what "Bejeweled" does. These gem-matching games are now known as match-three games. PopCap estimates they sell a "Bejeweled" game every 4.3 seconds and that some 7.5 billion hours have been spent playing the game.īut beyond the franchise's own success, "Bejeweled" and "Bejeweled 2" not only helped propel the popularity of casual games as a whole but also spawned an entirely new genre of games. Since the franchise launched a decade ago, more than 50 million units have been sold across 17 platforms. the challenge of trying to get as many matches as you can as quickly as you can. That simple puzzle mechanic is delightful in itself, but the challenge of chaining together as many matches as you can in a single move. The basics of "Bejeweled" are seemingly simple - faced with a game board filled with rows and columns of different kinds of sparkling gems, it's your job to swap adjacent gems to match at least three gems of the same kind. Zombies" and "Peggle" on top of "Bejeweled" spinoffs like "Bejeweled Blitz" and "Bejeweled Twist." Nowadays, the company boasts 350 employees in offices around the globe and has delivered hits like "Plants vs. Created by three guys working out of an apartment in Seattle, "Bejeweled" won the hearts of bored office workers everywhere and skyrocketed to popularity, launching those three guys - aka PopCap Games - into the gaming big leagues. It's been ten years since the first "Bejeweled" launched as a browser game. pretty much everyone who owns a computer has played "Bejeweled" or, at the very least, has played one of the many many "Bejeweled" knockoffs out there. You have played "Bejeweled" right? I mean. That's because "Bejeweled 3" - the first true "Bejeweled" sequel in six years - is more "Bejeweled" and better "Bejeweled." In fact, it's the best "Bejeweled" there's ever been. "Bejeweled 3" has launched and it will suck you in just as its ground-breaking predecessors have sucked you in. Zombies" even though, yes, both games were created by casual gaming powerhouse PopCap Games and, yes, both games are brain-consumingly addictive. ![]() On the other hand, if you erase it quickly in other modes, it will have the opposite effect, and even if it’s an interesting puzzle game, you don’t really feel the need to be “Bejeweled 3.And no, I'm not getting my "Bejeweled" crossed with my "Plants vs. There are various game modes, but the one we are mainly playing in is the Lightning mode, where the above features are most utilized. This produces a very fast and unbroken development. The biggest feature is that you can operate it at other places during the effect after erasing a set of gems. An action puzzle with a simple rule of swapping adjacent gems and arranging three of the same colors to erase them. The game should be taken by those who are tired of constant restrictions on social media. A product with a direct purpose to “kill time“, though: PopCap Games have allowed the game to grow with a variety of modes that embellish the simple process of matching pieces in a row. A game that has gained especially great popularity (and the creation of clone games) in social networks, due to its simple gameplay that does not require a large thought process and computer games skills. ![]() If you’re looking for a shooting game that you can play for a few minutes at a time without getting too involved, then get Deer Drive for the Nintendo Wii. ![]() You can buy just the game alone or spend a little extra to get the version with the rifle attachment to help make the experience more realistic. Other than the aiming system sometimes not being very accurate, it is still genuinely fun to play and makes a great party game with its 4-player support. Overall (3 out of 5)ĭeer Drive is too simple of a game to be taken seriously, so I won’t judge it too harshly. The sound effects are very basic with gunshots and animal running sounds. For a game like this, the deer death animations were a bit too realistic, though I don’t remember seeing any blood. They will slow their run, stumble, or just keel over and sometimes you’ll even see a leg shake while they are on the ground. ![]() What kind of creeped me out was how realistically the deer died when you shot them. What I liked was how well the animals were animated when they moved, and it shows the deer jumping over stuff and things like that. Each forest setting is kind of basic, but it is wide and lets you pan back and forth with the crosshairs so you have a pretty good size playing field. I was pretty impressed by the graphics in this game, especially the animation. The need to constantly reload makes it even more difficult. Having a gun controller (including the optional rifle attachment pictured here) does make it a little more fun, but it still isn’t as accurate as I think it should be. I can see a lot of people getting angry at this game for not properly registering your shots. This is one game that could benefit from the Wii MotionPlus extra sensitivity, but it does not support it. I swear there were countless times where I had the crosshair exactly where it needed to be and I completely missed. You get a small crosshair to put over the deer and you actually have to hit them in the front half of their body to make it count. In Remington Super Slam, Alaska you'll find yourself face to face with more. ![]() I found the controls in this game to be kind of annoying because it didn’t seem to register the shots very well. With arcade-style scoring, an arsenal of authentic Remington shotguns, and more than 50 trophies and power-ups to ear. Even when the screen is full of running deer, taking more than one down before you have to reload can be difficult. The challenge is that they move fairly quickly and it’s quite hard to get a good shot unless they are closer to you. After you’ve played through a few levels you can guess where they will come out and where they are going. Instead, the deer and other animals come from the same few places every time and follow predetermined paths. The AI in this game is virtually non-existent. I’ve heard this called a great party game, and I agree. Of course, if you have a gun controller and nobody else does, they might be a little jealous. It can make for some heated competition and really amps up the gameply. While the single player portion of the game is kind of simple and repetitive, the multiplayer game can be a ton of fun with up to four people shooting at stuff on screen. While playing, you do not move around and just stay in one spot and shoot until you have shot enough of them to move on to the next level. Occasionally, a grizzly bear will charge out of the woods and attack, so you have to shoot them before they get to you. If you shoot a doe you will lose points, but you gain points for the harder to kill targets like squirrels and birds. A nonstop barrage of deer come running out of the woods and you have to shoot a certain number of them before a time limit is up. Gameplay (3 out of 5)ĭeer Drive is a shooting gallery with live targets, sort of like Duck Hunt with deer. Be warned that the shot deer will stumble and fall in fairly realistic ways, although there is no blood or gore. It’s still pretty fun for short periods of time and requires no learning curve - you just point and shoot. One might classify this as a hunting game since you do shoot at animals that are hunted throughout North America, but in reality this is just a shooting gallery type game. Have more people in your party? Well that's no problem because with Deer Drive up to 4 players can compete against one another in the fast-paced Party mode.Deer Drive, released in 2009, is a crazy shooting game for the Nintendo Wii where you shoot at a variety of running animals in different forest settings. So grab a buddy and see who can rack up the largest number of trophy-winning bucks. Mastiff, a worldwide publisher of videogames is bringing the award-winning PC title, Deer Drive over to the Nintendo Wii on January 20, 2009.Īside from its fast paced shooting action and easy to play, hard to master style of gameplay, Deer Drive also features over 33 stages and over a dozen animals, not to mention it is the first hunting game on Wii to feature simultaneous multiplayer hunting action. It was a challenging little classic that had you break apart rows upon rows of shiny little blocks using a ball that you had to ensure never hit the ground. It’s very similar though.ĭX-Ball is an independently-made game that was developed in the ‘90s that operates under a lot of similar design principles as Breakout. At first blush, it might look really derivative, and you would not be entirely wrong in thinking so. However, that does not mean it can’t be just as fun its progenitor. Even so, DX-Ball still has a few tricks up its sleeve that help it stand out in the crowd. Besides, you could do a whole lot worse for a game that’s completely free to play. Like all the various clones of Breakout that came before and after it, DX-Ball plays like a combination of pinball and Pong. You control a paddle with your mouse and use it to keep a little white ball aloft in the air. Failure to do so results in you losing a life. In the meantime, you have to use the ball to destroy an array of blocks above you. Some are invisible and will only appear once the ball collides with them once. Some blocks are indestructible, some blow up at the slightest touch, and so on. It may not sound exciting at first, by DX-Ball manages to mix things up with its variety of power-ups. Some blocks will release a power-up when they are destroyed if you catch it with your paddle, you can benefit from any number of boons. You can increase the size of your paddle, add more balls to bounce around, get the ability to catch and strategically re-launch the ball at your whim, or equip your paddle with a pair of blasters to shoot and destroy blocks in an instant. ![]() Powers stack as well, so if you’re able to nab each one that comes your way, keeping that ball up in the air can be a piece of cake. However, not all power-ups are so benign. They can have all sorts of negative effects one can shrink your paddle, one will cause the blocks to sink lower every time the ball bounces, one will increase the movement speed of the ball, and one will even outright kill you! Just to mess around with you, DX-Ball incorporates a variety of power-downs that can make things harder if you make the mistake of grabbing them. The power-ups and power-downs of DX-Ball make it far more dynamic and unpredictable than your usual Breakout clone. You have no idea just what’s going to pop up on every screen. Sometimes a level will be over in a flash because you got a good combination of abilities. Other times, it could take a good while before anything decent comes your way.Įither way, you could easily call this game the Super Mario Bros. DX-Ball would be fun for a few minutes on its own, but the assorted abilities you can receive at any time seal the deal and increase the replay value. ![]() Sword Of The Necromancer: Revenant is in development for PC ( Steam) and consoles. ![]()
